This round is effective for self-defense because it features Sierra’s 55 grain GameKing. While a hunting bullet by design, the same accuracy and crushing terminal performance that suit the GameKing so well for hunting also make it a fine choice for self-defense. The hollow point boat tail bullet has a streamlined jacket and tapered base which minimize how much drag it incurs in flight, keeping its trajectory flat and less influenced by crosswinds. As the GameKing penetrates, it expands to register a wide, effective wound cavity.
This round’s bullet consistently penetrates to a depth of 11.25” in bare ballistic gelatin. A barrier like heavy clothing does little to change the GameKing’s terminal performance, and neither do wall board nor plywood for that matter.
This round is specifically designed for “urban rifles” including M16s and AR-15s. Its brass case is drawn and bottlenecked according to Federal’s closely monitored tolerances, and its primer and propellant are both matched to supply a steady 3,220 fps muzzle velocity out of a 24” barrel. According to Federal’s data this round has a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.254, granting it nearly 300 ft lbs of energy at 500 yards – still adequate for effective self-defense!
